At the end of the fourth day, Gavaskar was batting on 42. When he returned to his hotel room, he told his roommate (in those days they shared hotel rooms), "tomorrow, it is a double hundred". Gavaskar gave India its sense of self-respect on the cricket field.

I never saw Sunny play, only footage such as this. I know he was responsible for erecting the springboard for other players such as Sachin, Dravid, arguably even Kapil, so whatever his personal limitations may be, Indian & World cricket owes much to Sunny, of that there is no doubt whatsoever.

Yeah no shit. Even in 90s they were this size where ball could be given a chase. And now? Fucking the fielders have no chance and it's so easy to hit fours and sixers...shit's lame.

Someone who opens ... ( 9 months ago by sarathyj)
Someone who opens the innnings against the fearsome fast bowlers of his age, WITHOUT WEARING A HELMET, and never getting hit in the head ever. There were no restrictions on bouncers as well at his time. Ask any today's batsment to walk out without a helmet, let alone as an opener. SUNNY THE GREAT!
The second coming ... ( 9 months ago by Dogevpr2)
The second coming of Rohan Kanhai...Gavaskar is the only batsman I would consider equal to Bradman. He took 12 centuries off the 4 pronged W. Indies pace attack.

I also remember listening to the radio commentary in the late hours in India. I have to confess that this match converted my interest in Cricket into passion for it! Amazing feat at a time when India was relatively a weak International side! Thanks for uploading it.

When he made 774 in his debut series, the Windies pace quartet didn't exist. In 1978, the Windies at their best went to Kerry Packer. In the 1983 Windies tour, He was a flop. He scored on their return tour, but again on dead wickets. He was again a flop against Dennis Lillee in the '81 Oz series. He was also a flop against Imran Khan.
The two batsmen who took the attack to genuine pace attacks were Viswanath and Mohinder Amarnath.
